Medan, North Sumatra, July 15 (Antara) - All roads to new Kualanamu airport in North Sumatra must be free from motorcycle gangs, and therefore all parties should jointly anticipate such a criminal act, Governor Gatot Pujo Nugroho said here on Monday.

"Prevention of criminal acts including motorcycle gangs comes into effect in all areas of North Sumatra, particularly along the roads to Kualanamu airport," he said.

According to the governor, the Kualanamu airport that will start operation on July 25, 2013 should reflect the security in North Sumatra.
State airport operator PT Angkasa Pura President Tri Sungkono said over the weekend that the new international airport of Kualanamu would start operation on July 25, ending the service of the old Polonia airport in Medan.

"By the time the Kualanamu airport comes on stream , Polonia will stop its activities for good," Tri Sungkono said in a statement received in Jakarta on Saturday.

The grand opening by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono will be held on 9 September 2013.

The day before the "soft opening" or on July 24 night all aircraft normally to park overnight at Polonia will fly to Kualanamu after disembarkation of passengers and cargo unloaded at Polonia.

Landing would be directed to Kualanamu after midnight of July 24, Tri Sunoko said.

At the same time , the airport train linking the airport with the main railway station in Medan would be put into operation.

"The train ticket price is Rp80,000. The airport could also be reached with taxi or buses," he said.

Air Transport Director General Herry Bakti S Gumay said the operation of the new airport needs support from the provincial administration. ***2***
