Medan, N.Sumatra, May 17 (Antara) - The University of Muhammadiyah of North Sumatra (UMSU) is strengthening cooperation with the Centre for Islamic Development Studies (Isdev), University Sains Malaysia (USM), particularly in the field of astronomy, through lecturers` exchange and other means.
The Rector of the UMSU, Dr Agussani, said here on Tuesday that the university will send its experts on astronomy and mass media to speak at an international forum in Malaysia.
The plan was inspired by a visit of master and doctoral students, as also of professors from Isdev-USM to the UMSU where they had engaged in detail with the subject of astronomy studies.
In addition, they had also studied the working of a number of traditional and modern instruments to determine such important things in Islam as the Qibla (the Islam direction for worship), and the beginning and the end of Ramadhan (the month of fasting).
The Malaysian academics were interested to study astronomy at the UMSU because the university has five advanced digital telescopes to see the moon during the day.
In addition, the UMSU also has an astronomy observatory, which is a facility to learn about space and determine the direction of Qibla for hundreds of mosques in North Sumatra.
"The cooperation with Isdev-USM encourages the UMSU to continue to develop astronomy as a science required by the Islamic world in this era of globalization," Agussani explained.
According to him, this cooperation also strengthens the UMSU`s resolve to work towards becoming a world class university which requires it to build a network with universities across the world.
Meanwhile, the Director of Isdev- University Sains Malaysia, Prof Sukri Saleh, appreciated the UMSU for having an astronomy observatory and excellent human resources on the subject.
He stated that most universities in Indonesia do not have such a potential or facilities.
"Therefore, we have also asked the UMSU to send its astronomy experts to Malaysia, and receive envoys from Malaysia to study the science at the UMSU," Sukri informed.
