Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly emphasized Indonesia's commitment to continuing its support for work programs of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and contributing actively to various global initiatives on intellectual property.
Laoly expressed the commitment at the opening of the 65th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of WIPO in Geneva, Switzerland, on Tuesday (July 9).
"We hope cooperation with WIPO going forward can run smoothly like for the development of the Indonesian Intellectual Property Academy and various other running projects that are related to the creative industry, brands, designs, and SMEs," the minister noted in a statement from his ministry.
Laoly affirmed that Indonesia would accelerate the ratification of the WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Associated Traditional Knowledge (GRATK) in accordance with internal procedures.
The minister signed the treaty on Monday (July 8) in Geneva.
Laoly expressed hope that other countries would also immediately ratify the treaty so that the minimum requirement of 15 ratifications for the treaty to come into force could be achieved.
He said that Indonesia is currently in the process of registering the Indonesian Culture Collection (InaCC) as an International Depositary Authority based on the Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for the Purposes of Patent Procedure.
"This initiative reflects the sustainable efforts to increase Indonesia's role in the management and utilization of global genetic resources," he remarked.
He affirmed that Indonesia also accentuated the importance of making the Design Law Treaty diplomatic conference a success. The conference will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in November 2024.
Developing contemporary issues such as digital technology and artificial intelligence would be discussed at the forum, according to him, considering that intellectual property plays a vital role in driving innovation in this field.
Laoly echoed Indonesia's readiness to be actively involved in establishing an intellectual property framework on the global stage that can bridge the digital divide and is responsive to technological advancements and the needs of the wider community.
At the WIPO general assembly session, Indonesia and ASEAN countries held an exhibition for products resulting from innovations. This step is part of the commitment to utilizing intellectual property which is also a tool to improve the economy.
