Medan  (Antaranews Sumut) - North Sumatra`s economic growth this year is predicted to be more or less the same as in 2017, economist Wahyu Ario Pratomo said.

In 2017, the North Sumatra`s economy grew 5.12 percent and this year, the growth is expected to be around 5.1-5.3 percent, Wahyu, an economic lecturer at the North Sumatra University, said.

"The economic growth remains moderate on global economic turbulence and low commodity prices," Wahyu said here on Thursday.

He said in the first half of the year the economy of the province grew 5.02 percent, adding normally, the economic growth is higher in the third quarter of a year.

The economy of North Sumatra is determined much by commodity prices in international market.

North Sumatra`s export commodities are mainly palm oil and rubber , the prices of which have remained low over the past several years.

Wahyu, however, said he was confident the economy of the province would improve in 2019 driven partly by growing tourism after the opening of the Silangit International airport opening better access to Lake Toba.

Lake Toba is in the government priority in tourism development.
