Jakarta, May 27 (Antara) - The Indonesian Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations here on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding on fishery cooperation.

"The MOU is expected to help strengthen cooperation between the ministry and FAO through a series of projects and activities on fisheries to be implemented in the near future," Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sharif C. Sutardjo said in a press statement.

The MOU was signed by FAO Director General José Graziano da Silva and Minister Sutardjo in a ceremony which was attended by FAO Representative for Indonesia Mustafa Imir and Acting Chief of the Office for Communication, Partnerships and Advocacy Partnerships and Advocacy Branch's Rodrigo Castaneda.

During 2013, FAO and the ministry have agreed to carry out nine fishery activities, including several workshops.

In June 2013, they will organize The Indian Ocean and Pacific Conference (IOPAC) 2013 in Bali. In August 2013, they will hold a marine aquaculture course for FAO member countries, also in Bali.

A freshwater aquaculture course will be held in Sukamandi, West Java, in September 2013.

In October 2013, they will organize a workshop on tuna remote sensing and women's empowerment on seaweed cultivation.

Regional Rice Initiative projects will be carried out from June to September 2013 in West Java and Central Java Provinces.

"Another program scheduled to be implemented for three years starting 2013 is 'Technical Cooperation Program (TCP) on Development of Preventive Aquatic Animal Health Protection Plan and Enhancing Emergency response, Capacity to Shrimp Disease Outbreak in Indonesia'," the minister said. .
Since 2007, the ministry and FAO have signed a number of MOUs among other things on technical cooperation, capacity building, short courses and exchanges of information in the maritime and fishery fields.

The ongoing projects jointly conducted by the ministry and FAO include the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem Project (BOBLME) for the 2012-2014 period, the Strategies for Trawl Fisheries By Catch Management (REBYC-II CTI) for the 2012-2016 period, and the Regional Fisheries Livelihoods Programme For South and Southeast (2009-2013) involving participants from Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Timor Leste and Vietnam.
