The provincial government of North Sumatra officially started administering the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) vaccine to livestock in the province on Monday.
The FMD vaccinations were carried out in Medan City, and the districts of Langkat, Deli Serdang, Padang Lawas, Simalungun, Serdang Bedagai, and Karo.
"We have allocated (vaccine doses) to seven districts and cities. Today, we have started carrying out vaccinations," Head of the Veterinary Medicine Section of the Food Security and Livestock Office of North Sumatra Hendra Sutrisno said while monitoring vaccinations in Deli Serdang District here Monday.
Sutrisno informed that North Sumatra Province received an allocation of 1,600 doses of the FMD vaccine for the first phase from the central government, with the allocated vaccines intended for areas reporting FMD infections to prevent the spread of the disease.
He affirmed that in the early stages, his office will prioritize vaccines for dairy cows that are considered at higher risk of FMD transmission.
Farm animals that will get the injection are those who have been declared healthy and free of FMD exposure, including those who have never contracted the disease before.
On June 14, 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture commenced the FMD vaccination program for livestock from Sidoarjo District, East Java.
Vaccine doses are being prioritized for healthy animals that are at high risk of infection, such as animals at livestock breeding centers, community-owned dairy farms, dairy cooperatives, and beef cattle farms.
Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture Nasrullah on Monday revealed that so far, 58,275 ruminant livestock have received the FMD vaccine in 19 provinces.
Since June 24, the government has distributed a total of 651,700 doses of emergency FMD vaccines to various regions in the country.
It has prepared as many as three million vaccine doses, and it will continue to increase the number of vaccines until they reach 29 million doses.
