She said direct flight with other countries would need approval from the Central Government.

"We hope the Central Government would approve the plan as it is in line with the policy to facilitate expansion of investment and development," she added.

She quoted President Joko Widodo as saying on Monday at the opening of a meeting of National Development Plan 2018 in Jakarta that investment flows to Indonesia especially to the regions would be facilitated.

The potential is high for foreign investment and tourism development in North Sumatra especially after thye operation of a new international airport in Silangit, she said.

Silangit International Airport is an airport located in Siborong-Borong, North Tapanuli, North Sumatra.

The airport serves as the main gateway to the nearby Lake Toba as well as the surrounding area. It would contribute to economic and tourism development around Lake Toba, which had been included in Indonesia`s 10 new emerging destinations.
