Yogyakarta, May 18 (ANTARA) - Indonesia needs around five million entrepreneurs in order to become an advanced and self-reliant country, the country's chief economic minister, Hatta Rajasa, said.
"The number is two percent of the country's total population. Right now the number of entrepreneurs in Indonesia is around 1.56 percent of the total population," he said in a stadium general held by the Economics Faculty of State University of Yogyakarta here on Saturday.
The minister said entrepreneurship is the most effective means of creating jobs and reducing poverty.
"Entrepreneurship is one of the important factors for creating common prosperity we have so far wished to build," he said.
The minister said the launch of the National Entrepreneurship Movement on February 2 in 2011 was proof of the seriousness of the government, academicians, private institutions and the community to cooperate to realize it.
"The synergy is important to increase competitiveness so that we could take the most benefit from the increasingly united economy of the world," he said.
Minister Hatta said micro-, small and medium businesses (UMKM) had to be developed adding that the businesses are the embryo of entrepreneurship and the foundation as well as prime movers of national economic growth.
"In 2011 the UMKM contributes 57.12 percent of the gross domestic product totaling Rp3,840 trillion and absorbing up to 102.43 million," he said.
He said Indonesia must not forget about developing its human resource to acquire sciences and high technology for increasing their innovative capability.
"That is vital for creating competitiveness to support resurrection of Indonesian civilization," he said.(H-YH)
